Beautiful skin by genie K

What I observed that I think could be harmful:
These images feature an imbalance in skin color representation, making it difficult to find Asians.

Why I think this could be harmful, and to whom:
The absence of Asians in imagery with unbalanced skin color representation can lead to cultural erasure, identity invalidation, reinforcement of stereotypes, and hinder efforts towards building inclusive societies. Specifically for Asians, it can impact their self-esteem negatively.

How I think this issue could potentially be fixed:
To mitigate the underrepresentation of Asians in AI-generated imagery with unbalanced skin color representation, we can:

  • Ensure diverse training data.
  • Implement bias detection and correction.
  • Incorporate inclusive design principles.
  • Engage stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Establish transparency and accountability measures.

I agree, and I also think the prompt “beautiful” and associated images could raise certain anxiety for the audience, for example, the skins showed here all have very even complexion, maybe showing more diverse definitions of beauty like blushing skin could be a next step to aim for, although this is quite hard even for people to make good definitions.
