What I observed that I think could be harmful:
A couple photographs of white men, puzzle pieces, and numbers, which reflect a very specific notion of autism that isn’t representative. There is not a single person who isn’t a white man. Autism in other populations are underdiagnosed, and puzzle pieces are considered within the autistic community as a symbol that they do not claim.
Why I think this could be harmful, and to whom:
This can be harmful because it perpetuates stereotypes that autism is primarily a neurotype seen in white men when actually autism is seen in all demographics across many populations. There has historically been a significant underdiagnosis of autism in POC and women, because the understanding of autism is heavily white-male-centric. This will be harmful to autistic people who aren’t white men.
How I think this issue could potentially be fixed:
Return more diverse images for this prompt, representing different genders, races, and ages.
